Summary

THE INVESTIGATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ COMPETENCES ABOUT DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ MATHEMATICS SKILLS

The purpose of this study is to investigate mathematics teachers’ competences about developing students’ mathematics skills in terms of their views and in-class perfomances. In this study, interview and observation methods were used as qualitative research methods. The sample of the study consists of total of 20 mathematics teachers working in 5, 6, 7 and 8th grades of seven secondary schools in Malatya city Yeşilyurt district. The items of interview form and the behaviours observed by observation form were determined from the booklet of mathematics teaching special field competences prepared by Ministry of National Education (2015). Some of the findings of the study are as follows: According to findings of observations, most of the mathematics teachers have some deficiencies about the four special field competences which are investigated in this study; the teachers mostly use the competence which lets their students use reasoning skill and its simplifying subskill; the least used competence by the teachers is the one which lets the students use the language of mathematics as a communication tool; all the teachers perform merely in one special field competence which lets students use reasoning skill, but they have lack of performances in other competences; according to findings of interviews, they evaluate themselves as competent in these four special field competences. Also, except from the competence which lets the students use the language of mathematics as a communication tool, most of them have partially consistency between their views and in-class performances.
