MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE IN ATHLETES: IRRATIONAL PERFORMANCE BELIEFS, PERFECTIONISM, CHALLENGE AND THREAT PERCEPTION

Recent research in current sports psychology literature delves deeply into the various factors that influence psychological performance in sports. Some of these studies explore athletes' perceived motivational climate and draw attention to innovative searches on cognitive-behavioral approaches, incorporating both positive and negative aspects within this context. This study aims to reveal the relationships between athletes' irrational performance beliefs, perfectionism, challenge and threat perceptions, and motivational climates. Another purpose of this study is to assess the predicting research variables in forecasting the motivational climates engendered by the mastery climate and performance climate dimensions. A total of 416 performance athletes, 260 men, and 156 women, were included in the survey using the relational screening model. Participants were presented with the Irrational Performance Beliefs Inventory 2, the APS Perfectionism Scale, the Challenge and Threat in Sport Scale, the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire, and the Personal Information Form. Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analyses are utilized to test the data. The findings showed intense positive relationships between athletes' irrational performance beliefs, perfectionism, challenge and threat perceptions, and motivational climates, while the relationship between perfectionist orderliness and threat was negative. Additionally, as determined, the challenge is positively related to the mastery climate, while the threat is positively associated with the performance climate. According hierarchical regression analysis, demandingness and awfulizing are negative, and orderliness, dissatisfaction, and challenge are positive predictors of the mastery climate. Furthermore, low frustration tolerance negatively, and depreciation, orderliness, and threat positively predict performance climate.
