Development of technology and the increase in the speed of communication have brought development in many areas. One of the rapidly developing areas is language teaching. In order to perform language teaching completely, it is necessary to transfer the geography where the language is spoken, the culture and the social memory of the society that speaks that language, as well as the rules of the language. In this respect, professions and disappearing professions are among the topics that should be addressed during language teaching. The fact that Turkish learners see the disappearing professions will make it easier for them to adapt when they see the names of these professions, the people who perform these professions or the products that occur as a result of these professions in social life. The aim of this study is to find out the professions classified as disappearing professions by the Ministry of Commerce among the professions included in Turkish teaching books written for English speakers in the Ottoman period. Determining the place of these professions in social life in the Ottoman period will facilitate people who learn Turkish afterwards and who are new to Turkish culture to adapt to Turkish and Turkish culture. Document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this study. The list of disappearing professions with traditional, cultural or artistic value updated by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Commerce in 2019 was used as data collection tool in the study. Seventeen books written for English speakers in the Ottoman period were examined within the framework of a list of professions that were about to disappear. As a result of the study, it was found that the twenty-three professions in the list were used in works for a total of ninety-eight times. While the related professions were included in the works of twelve of the fourteen authors who produced works in the Ottoman period, James William Redhouse was the author who included professions the most among these authors. The fact that most of the professions in the works of the period are in the list of disappearing professions with traditional, cultural or artistic value shows the positive and negative effects of technology.

Teknolojinin gelişmesi ve iletişim hızının artması birçok alanda gelişimi beraberinde getirmiştir. Hızla gelişmekte olan alanlardan biri de dil öğretimidir. Dil öğretimini eksiksiz bir şekilde gerçekleştirmek için dilin kuralları haricinde dilin konuşulduğu coğrafyayı, o dili konuşan toplumun kültürünü ve toplumsal hafızasını da aktarmak gerekmektedir. Bu açıdan dil öğretimi esnasında değinilmesi gereken konular arasında meslekler ve kaybolmaya yüz tutmuş meslekler de yer almaktadır. Türkçe öğrenen insanların kaybolmaya yüz tutmuş meslekleri görmesi, sosyal hayatta bu meslek isimleri, meslekleri icra eden insanlar veya meslek sonucu ortaya çıkan ürünlerle karşılaştıklarında uyum sağlamalarını kolaylaştıracaktır. Bu araştırmanın amacı Osmanlı döneminde İngilizce bilenler için yazılmış Türkçe öğretimi kitaplarında yer alan meslekler arasında Ticaret Bakanlığı tarafından kaybolmaya yüz tutmuş meslekler olarak sınıflandırılan meslekleri belirlemektir. Bu mesleklerin Osmanlı döneminde toplum hayatındaki yerini belirlemek Türkçeyi sonradan öğrenen ve Türk kültürünü yeni tanıyan insanların Türkçeye ve Türk kültürüne uyum sağlamasını kolaylaştıracaktır. Bu araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Ticaret Bakanlığı tarafından 2019 yılında güncellenen Geleneksel, Kültürel veya Sanatsal Değeri Olan Kaybolmaya Yüz Tutmuş Meslekler Listesi kullanılmıştır. Osmanlı döneminde İngilizce bilenler için yazılmış on yedi eser kaybolmaya yüz tutmuş meslekler listesi çerçevesinde incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda listede yer alan yirmi üç mesleğin toplam doksan sekiz kez eserlerde kullanıldığı görülmüştür. Osmanlı döneminde eser veren on dört yazardan on ikisinin yazdığı eserlerde ilgili meslekler ver alırken bu yazarlar arasında mesleklere en fazla yer veren yazar James William Redhouse’tur. Dönem eserlerin yer alan mesleklerin çoğunun Geleneksel, Kültürel veya Sanatsal Değeri Olan Kaybolmaya Yüz Tutmuş Meslekler Listesi’nde yer alması teknolojinin olumlu ve olumsuz etkilerini göstermektedir.
