THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JOB SATISFACTION AND PROFESSIONAL BURNOUT: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS ON PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS TEACHERS

This meta-analysis focused on the results of studies on the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout in physical education teachers based on data from relatively small samples. Meta-analysis is used to combine findings from an array of individual and independent studies. This paper adopted the meta-analysis method to determine the overall effect size and synthesize the data on job satisfaction and burnout in physical education teachers. The sample consisted of 15 articles (n=2634) published between 2000 and 2021 investigating the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout in Turkish and non-Turkish teachers. Analysis was conducted based on a random-effects model because the sample was heterogeneous (Q=162.241; p=.00; I2= 91.371%). According to the random-effects model, the overall effect size of the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout was -.25 (-.37 to -.12 for a confidence level of 95.00%), pointing to a negative correlation between them. The research site and type and year of publication had no moderating effect on the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout. Job satisfaction has a moderate effect on burnout in physical education teachers. This result is significant because it helps us better understand how to cope with teacher burnout.
