Summary

LEXICAL ANALYSIS OF WRITTEN EXAMS OF STUDENTS LEARNING TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

In this study, the students’ use of collocation and word frequency use has been analyzed at each level separately. The levels are A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. Cross-level word frequency and total number of words have been analyzed in sketch engine program which is used for corpora analysis. The use of collocation has been analyzed by two different raters and words are categorized semantically. It has been observed that the students used more technical and abstract words when their level increases. However, in the frequency analysis the frequently used words did not show a significant change in terms of meaning. In other words, frequently used words were similar across the levels. Another finding is an anticipated result that when the levels increased the number of used words increased and length of the texts increased. This is anticipated as in each level exam the instructions are given for the expected use of number of words.
