FAMILY INVOLVEMENT IN CULTURAL HERITAGE EDUCATION: TEACHERS' AND FAMILIES' VIEWS ON VIRTUAL MUSEUM PRACTICES

Museums have an important function in cultural heritage education and they are significant institutions with diverse aspects related to the works they display, which accommodate abstract and concrete cultural heritage factors and present detailed information regarding the history, art, science and lifestyles of past civilizations. Virtual museums provide opportunities for online visits of these works through the transfer of the collections of works displayed in a museum into digital platforms. Teachers, who study at the Distance Learning MA Program on Character and Values Education at Anadolu University, work in various areas and took place within the scope of this study, prepared a virtual museum tour practice plan within the scope of a learning outcome related to cultural heritage. The teachers gained experience by practicing the virtual museum tour plan at home with the participation of their own family members. The aim of this study is to determine the views and experiences of teachers and families regarding the virtual museum tour carried out on cultural heritage education. The phenomenology pattern, which is one of the qualitative study patterns, was used in the study. The study was conducted with 10 teachers studying in the Distance Learning MA Program on Character and Values Education at Anadolu University and the families of these teachers. In the study, the data were obtained in a written form developed separately for teachers and families, through teacher and family data collection forms comprising of standardized open-ended questions. The phenomenological data analysis technique was used in the analysis of the study data. As a result of the study, it has come forth that the virtual museum tour practice regarding cultural heritage education provides various outcomes for teachers, both personally and professionally. In the study, the results that the families participating in the virtual museum tour practice regarding cultural heritage education acquired various outcomes such as obtaining different types of information and awareness of the significance and wealth of cultural heritage. It has come into view in the study that the virtual museum tour practice realized with the participation of the families impacts communication and interaction within the family positively.  At the end of the research, various recommendations for practice and research were presented.
