Summary

TEACHERS' PERCEPTION OF EDUCATION AND TEACHING IN THE CONTEXT OF THE RELATIONSHIP AND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE CONCEPTS

The present research, aiming to determine how the difference between the concepts of education and teaching is perceived by practitioners (teachers) and the reflections of today's education-teaching practices on teachers, students and society, was structured according to the phenomenology pattern, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The study group of the research, in the formation of which maximum variation sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used, consists of 14 teachers (primary and secondary school) working in public schools in Tokat province in the 2022-2023 academic year. The research data were obtained through interview, semi-structured education perception interview form developed by the researchers, and content analysis technique was used in the analysis of the data. According to the results of the research, while teaching is the transfer of curriculum and memorization knowledge, for which the place, time and conditions are certain, for the predetermined gains, education, on the other hand, is a quality that includes education and develops the individual in every way and prepares the individual for life. It has been observed that the obstacles in the implementation of the education that teachers believe in are primarily examination-oriented and teaching-priority structure related to the education policies followed. Intense curriculum, unnecessary information stack and detached content from life, together with parents' expectations for teaching and socio-economic problems were observed as obstacles. It has come to the fore that the existing education-teaching practices will create a type of generation in the future who is dependent, consuming, unable to solve problems, unquestioning, uniform, individualistic, unhappy, and asocial. In this context, it is recommended to reduce the intensity of lessons and to organize teaching activities based on experience by linking the curriculum with life, to strengthen the physical facilities of the school for teaching by doing and to take measures to reduce inequalities between school and students.
