Summary

This critical narrative review examines how nature-based recreation may support environmental learning in school-aged children. It separates participation, knowledge, nature connectedness, attitudes, behavioural intentions and enacted behaviour. Twenty publications were selected purposively: nine empirical studies of nature experiences and eleven reviews or integrative syntheses used to interpret their educational implications. Relevant full-text sections were examined for sixteen sources; four were used only for statements available in their abstracts. The review is not an exhaustive or systematic search. School-based nature lessons can improve subsequent classroom engagement, which is distinct from environmental learning. A controlled school programme reported more favourable attitudes but no clear effect on self-reported ecological behaviour. Other fieldtrip and camp studies point to possible gains in connection, reported behaviour or intention, although study designs and follow-up differ. A meta-analysis of 65 child intervention studies reported a positive pooled effect on pro-environmental behaviour across many intervention types; it does not estimate the effect of nature-based recreation alone. Camp research also associates emotionally meaningful participation with nature affinity, without demonstrating changes in environmental action. These findings motivate a programme design that links exploration and reflection with locally relevant questions and feasible action, while specifying the outcome to be measured. This framework is an interpretive proposal rather than a tested model. It suggests separate evaluation of immediate learning, later choices and any directly observed environmental action. In Türkiye, programme adaptation should consider access, age, educator support and local conditions. The available evidence supports the educational potential of nature-based experiences, but participation or nature connection alone cannot establish sustained environmental responsibility.

Abstract

Bu eleştirel anlatı derlemesi, doğa temelli rekreasyonun okul çağındaki çocuklarda çevresel öğrenmeyle hangi koşullarda ilişkilendirilebileceğini incelemektedir. Katılım, çevre bilgisi, doğaya bağlılık, tutum, davranış niyeti ve gerçekleşen davranış birbirinden ayrılmıştır. Amaçlı olarak seçilen yirmi yayının dokuzu doğa deneyimine ilişkin ampirik araştırma, on biri bulguların yorumlanmasında kullanılan derleme veya bütünleştirici sentezdir. On altı yayının ilgili tam metin bölümleri, dört yayının ise yalnız erişilebilen özetleri kullanılmıştır.
